DialNexa call settings control phone-call behavior around voicemail, caller silence, hold timeout, outbound ring timeout, reminder messages, ambient noise, and maximum duration. These settings decide what happens when nobody answers, the caller goes quiet, or the conversation runs too long.
Call settings are guardrails. If they are too loose, calls wander. If they are too tight, callers get cut off mid-thought.

Before You Begin

Use an editable draft version and decide the acceptable call duration, silence behavior, voicemail outcome, and route-specific restrictions for the use case.

Call Limit Rules

The dashboard and API validate call limits before saving an agent version.

Ring Timeout For Outbound Calls

Ring Timeout controls how long an unanswered outbound Plivo call should ring before the provider ends it as not picked up. The control is available to every workspace. It applies to outbound Plivo dialing.
  1. Open an editable draft agent and expand Call Settings.
  2. Choose a whole number from 10 to 30 seconds. New configurations default to 30 seconds.
  3. Save the draft, test the unanswered-call path, and publish the intended version before using it for new calls.
  4. Review the call outcome in Call History and confirm that the recipient was not connected.
Carrier setup adds time before the phone starts ringing, so elapsed time from starting the call can be longer than the selected value. The timeout does not control inbound calls, web calls, or transfer ringing. The API field is ring_duration_sec. Numeric input is rounded to a whole second and clamped to 10 to 30 rather than rejected for exceeding that range: 5 saves as 10, 90 as 30, and 22.6 as 23. Send a JSON number; non-numeric input fails validation. Read the saved configuration after updating. Older templates and copied versions are also brought into range.

Silence Handling For Speech To Speech Calls

End Call on Silence also applies to Speech to Speech agents. The silence timer starts after the welcome playback or a fallback wait when playback completion is unavailable. Reminder playback does not count as the caller responding or restart the conversation indefinitely. Test a call where the caller stays silent after the greeting and another where they answer after the reminder. Confirm that the call ends according to the saved silence setting, with enough time for the reminder to play.

End Call On Hold

Use End Call on Hold when an agent should stop waiting on a held call. Open an unpublished non-IVR agent, expand Call Settings, and choose a wait from 10 to 60 seconds. New agents default to 20 seconds. Save and publish the tested version to use it for new calls. The wait is measured from the start of a sustained detected hold, not from call connection. The runtime requires consecutive hold checks; a check that no longer detects hold resets that run. Detection and check timing mean the call may end later than the slider value. This control is separate from End Call on Silence and does not apply to an IVR menu. To verify it, place a test call, put the agent on hold, and check when the call ends. Repeat with a person returning before the timeout. Review the recording and call outcome before using a shorter wait on production calls.

Set Call Limits Intentionally

1

Decide voicemail behavior

For campaigns, choose whether voicemail should end the call or receive a short message.
2

Write a voicemail-safe message

Keep it short, include only safe dynamic variables, and test how the selected voice reads it.
3

Keep silence humane

Set the reminder interval first, then keep End Call On Silence at least 5 seconds later. This gives the caller one clear nudge before the call ends.
4

Choose the reminder wording

Keep the visible default when the reminder should follow the caller’s detected language. Enter a short custom message only when every caller should hear that exact wording.
5

Set max duration by use case

A reminder call and a support intake call should not have the same limit by accident.
6

Test edge cases

Let the test caller go quiet, hit voicemail, and talk longer than expected.

Call Setting Failure Modes

Add defaults for any {{variable}} used in the voicemail message.
Increase the reminder interval and End Call On Silence together. Keep at least 5 seconds between them so the reminder can play before the call ends.
The default reminder follows the caller’s detected language. If you entered custom text, DialNexa uses that wording instead. Clear the override or restore the visible default to return to language-aware behavior.
Review maximum duration, transfer handling, campaign retry settings, and whether the prompt ends calls clearly.
